What’s in it for me: Samina, Bala Janaagraha Volunteer
The most probing question I have encountered with during my experience as a facilitator with Bala Janaagraha has made me realize the vitality of the programme on the one hand but has nevertheless left me stumped on the other! In the midst of a heated discussion about civic rights and duties a student demanded an explanation as to why the kids have to worry about and take on adult problems like protecting the environment, saving water, trees and reduce recycle and reuse. Knowing whom to vote for, worrying about garbage clearance, roads should ideally steer clear from the mind of a child.
Although it seems to be too much to ask for from the children, the future of the society does lie in their hands and the best we can do is make them prepared so that when they do become full fledged citizens they are a more responsible and active generation then the one that preceded them.
Thus even though the classes started off with scepticism, hesitation and even rejection on the part of some students, through the course of the year I was a witness to these feelings gradually dying out. By the time the class completed the final live project they have matured in terms of being a part of society, the role they have to play as well as understood why each one needs to take responsibility for their city and country. This gradual growth is the most rewarding feeling and what keeps me going as a volunteer at Janaagraha!
