Dear Volunteers,
We wish you a happy and fulfilling new year as we send out this edition. 2009 was an eventful year which saw the launch of the Jaagte Raho! campaign that introduced the concept of the Area Voter Mitra; scaling up of the Area Suraksha Mitra initiative with the Civil Defence and Home Guards and the rollout of the WISA project among many others. More than 500 volunteers have supported our work internally over the last year and we hope to see these numbers growing as we continue our efforts to create public change. On the ground there are 3800 Area Suraksha Mitra’s signed up to enhance neighborhood security.
1200 Area Voter Mitras have volunteered to energize their neighborhoods to vote for the upcoming BBMP elections. We encourage all of you to be a part of transforming your neighborhood too. Log onto www.ijanaagraha.org to sign up. Thank you for sharing the news, stories and opportunities in Janaagraha amongst your networks.

RIBBON OF HONOUR:
Mahalakshmi Lokesh, Volunteer
"Not very often are we blessed with great volunteers especially when a sudden, desperate need arises and our resources are falling short. Mahalakshmi, though, was one such volunteer. She walked into our organization and soon won the hearts of all. She started volunteering initially just with data collation but ended up taking responsibility of various other programs and projects.
I would say that she has contributed to raising our benchmark of expectations from volunteers and we hope to see such enthusiasm and optimism in all our future volunteers."

""When the elements – ‘Government’ and ‘Citizens’ are mixed together the resultant is ‘A Democracy’. But, there is no perfect democracy; it is a start of a never-ending process towards a better society. It was fantastic to see a catalyst like Janaagraha working on this very mission - bettering the society.
I joined Janaagraha as an intern and got a chance to involve myself in the Jaagte Raho Campaign and also in other areas of my interest like designing. Some of the stand-out points in the organization are the excellent work atmosphere and the intellectual work force. The take-away lessons that I would inculcate in my life would be - team spirit, patience and the willingness to teach and learn thus ensuring effective transfer of knowledge and the power and effect that cajoling has on all the members in the team.
In the orientation session, Janaagraha had promised me a near perfect fit in their organizational structure but as I look ahead with this experience, I see the perfect fit for myself in our democratic system and most importantly in the society as a whole"."

" I’ve been associated with Janaagraha for the past 5 months. The work atmosphere has been very encouraging. The people working here have been very pro-active and efficient, which has been inspiring. The Jaagte Raho! Campaign is a very innovative process and has been interesting to work in. It is great to see that Janaagraha is acting as an effective medium between the Government and the citizens, through the AVM’s. Working here has also helped me understand our voting system better. I would like to conclude by saying kudos to the Janaagraha team for all the work that is being done and thank you for this enriching experience.."

Interview with Charitha, Volunteer
1) How did you get to know of Janaagraha?I heard of Janaagraha from my seniors in college, all of whom hold this organization in very high respect. They all had a fulfilling experience here.No wonder then that I was advised to intern in this very place for, according to them, this place would give me a lot more in return for what I would be able to give it. And I'm glad to say that they were perfectly right... Read More
